How to Clock Out When You Work from Home
I had an epiphany the other day…
I work from home and I never really turn work off. I’m always hopping back on my computer to get one more thing done or respond to someone. I realized my boundaries are seriously lacking, and it’s more difficult than I thought it would be to shut things down at a specific time each day.
When you work in an office you physically leave your workspace each day. Even if you are
still thinking about work, there is something about changing your environment or space you’re in. It dawned on me that I never “clock out” and how unhealthy that is for me personally and professionally.
Finding a balance and respecting your personal time is so important in order to thrive professionally, so I recently made a decision to draw a line in the sand and really make a change.
I now shut down everyday at 5:30pm. I close my computer, take a second to make the mental shift, and give myself permission to actually enjoy my personal time. I can’t believe the difference it has already made! I feel this sense of freedom that I haven’t felt in a long time.
With that said, do want to say I realize my career isn’t a traditional 9 to 5, and there are times I need to pull a late night, early morning, or will something come up that needs immediate attention. In fact, I’m working on something right now that I’m giving a little more time to in order to launch accordingly, but because my life isn’t out of whack anymore, it’s okay! I feel excited to give it my all and then get back to my 9 to 5. Ha!
